Alia Kara'Vesh Mountains
The Alia Kara’Vesh Mountains, also known as the “Spine of the World,” are a long chain along the western coast of Orem reaching from the Sorian Gulf almost to the continent’s southern tip. The highest peaks are generally found along the range’s coastal edge, with gradually decreasing elevations devolving into foothills as one travels inland. The highest peaks are perpetually snowcapped, especially toward the south, while lower elevations are more in line with the general climate of the area – for example, near the Great Rainforest the lower slopes are covered in tropical vegetation, while the extreme southern end of the chain is predominately pine forest.
The Spine’s higher elevations are virtually uninhabited, due primarily to their inhospitable climate but also to the historic presence of dragons, who maintained lairs in the highest peaks. The largest settlement in the Alia Kara’Vesh is the city of Astir on the mouth of the Iron River.
