Nimue's Hourglass

Nimue’s Hourglass is a legendary artifact discussed in the “Myth of the Founding”, the story of the founding of the Curators of the Sands of Time. The hourglass is only mentioned in the Myth, and was reportedly given to Nimue by the husband of the goddess of the Penwith islands. The artifact was said to be a silver hourglass with white sand hung on a necklace of silver and sapphires. (The association of the Hourglass with the Penwith islands, as well as the color of sapphires themselves—which evokes the sea—and the discovery of silver in Brightwater has led many items, buildings, and other works of art to be patterned after this grouping.)

In the Myth, Nimue, after being given the Hourglass, has the power to raise creations from the ground (she raises trees, a house, and a henge, among other things), her powerful oracular abilities, and does not age. When she removes the Hourglass from around her neck at the end of the Myth, she vanishes into dust (this same thing happens to Olwen, her husband, when he takes off his helmet and gives away his spear). It has been speculated that, if the Hourglass is real, its powers would be related to those utilized by Nimue in the Myth. Over the years, only a handful of scholars have taken the existence of the Hourglass seriously, with most dismissing it as a literary device and little more. A small minority of those who did take its existence seriously speculated that if the Hourglass did exist, it may give its wearer the ability to peer through time (and perhaps even locate other artifacts), though this seems (to many) like wishful thinking.
