Black Scroll

The Black Scrolls of the Fens

The Black Scroll of the Fens is a legendary magic scroll with silver rollers; its name is derived from the pitch-black nature of the paper that composes the scroll itself. The writing on the scroll can only be read outside at night, as the ink used to pen the scroll’s text will reflect only starlight. It is said that the Black Scroll was used by the Hag of the Mists—who lived in what is now the Vale of Haxby, west of the River Aera—to keep track of the names of the travelers she had lured to their doom in order to consume their souls. Supposedly, if someone holding the scroll begins reading the names aloud, they will be granted visions of the lives of those who met their tragic end at the hands of the Hag. The Black Scroll got the latter part of its name from the belief that the item itself is lost somewhere in the fens of western Penwith; on occasion a magic-user interested in necromancy or other dark arts may attempt to locate the scroll, but none has—apparently—ever been successful.
